2021 MINDFUL GIFT GIVING GUIDE
Year after year the gifts pile up. See, here, in our household, we have all end of the year birthdays. And then you throw in Christmas. And then the blended families…grandparents galore! We learned really early on that the pile up of toys and boxes and stuff wasn’t serving us very well. It was excessive and it was unnecessary on so many different levels. As I reflected, I became more aware of what I was giving and worked towards becoming a more conscious giver. I revel in the joy of gift giving, no matter how big or small, so I will never give it up. I love imagining the smile on someone’s face when he or she receives a personal note or a special gift. So, I’m going to continue giving in the ways I can, but always with intention.
Now with the season of giving upon us, gifting mindfully becomes an important aspect of how we support our community and economy, value our time, family and friends, even self, and make healthy changes, no matter how big or small, physical or mental. Read on for five ways to give mindfully, sustainably, and healthily.

1 | EXPERIENCES
Having been locked down, restricted, and in a prolonged sense of solitude, many of us are itching to get out. The past year plus of our lives however, doesn’t have to be the only reason for gifting experiences. Not only a great way to spend time with family + friends, make memories, and not accumulate more “stuff,” but a conscious effort towards not creating more waste. Experiences don’t have to be grand vacations. An annual pass to local museums or zoo is great for kids, while a craft class or wine tasting is a great way to spend time with friends. What about that hard to get dinner reservation and tickets to a show? Now you’re speaking my love language. I’d even take being served coffee in bed. Experiences don’t have to cost a lot; sometimes spending time with a busy family all at home is a gift in itself.

2 | SHOP SMALL
This is a great way to not only support your local artisans and community, but personalize your gift giving, making it a special offering rather than an obligatory action. Local maker markets in cities big and small are popping up, particularly this time of year. Still prefer to shop from the comfort of home? Etsy and even Instagram are excellent options. Did you know on Etsy you can filter your search down to your local metro area? Can’t find what you are looking for? Expand to your state. Not only are you helping your local economy, but you are keeping your carbon footprint as small as possible.

3 | SELF CARE
Let’s face it, everyone needs a little bit of self-care. Men and women alike are beginning to recognize that life isn’t always about how much we are doing and that taking time for self is an integral part of being our best selves. Who doesn’t love a great bath salt, foot scrub, or face mask? I love these all-natural tub teas and facial steamers for something different. And what about a non-toxic edible face mask? Yes please! Not into beauty routines? Try gifting a membership to Calm or Headspace. Even a copy of your favorite book to connect with someone special in your life.

4 | SPLURGE
Whether these make it on your own Gift List or in a group gift for that hard to buy for person in our life, these will sure to be a hit. Caraway’s ceramic cookware is not only non-toxic and chemical free, but comes with super cool storage components to keep your kitchen organized. Oh! And the colors…swoon. Be sure to check out their brand spanking new bakeware line. Trust me, it’ll be hard to choose. Love practical gifts? All natural, organic, certified, AND handmade in the USA pillows from Avocado Natural Mattress are a guilt-free way to try something new and healthier for you and your family. The 100-night trial makes this one a no brainer.

5 | DONATE
Is there a cause, organization, or charity near and dear to your heart? Ask that donations of time, goods, or money be made and vice versa. Ask your friends or family what organization or cause is important to them and donate. Want to help on a more personal level? “Adopt” a local family or child to spread some joy. I think we can all agree the world needs a bit more of this right now.
